Using VDSP, the V1.1 of the SHARC BSP compiles and links OK as a standalone module ready for the AD SHARC 489 EVAL board
Now the linker problems occur when I tried to integrate the BSP with my existing SHARC code which is all written in C++ using template classes etc.

Now if I use Normal Word Code instead of VISA in the code generation options it gets rid of the linker errors in my own code but still the other errors with the AWE code remain. There seems to be some incompatibility with NWC verses VISA code because the previous BSP compiled and linked OK using the default NWC option and I had no problems integrating it with my own code.
If I isolate the AWE code and compile with VISA enabled I get the following linker errors with my own code. The question is why does this happen ? Is it an issue with my LDF file ? Anyone had similar issues before ?

Hi,
Note that all the AWE libraries are built with C compiler and to integrate these API's you must written wrapper with "extern C {}", because C++ can't find the function defined in C library (I hope you are doing this, but make sure). Explicitly you have to specify.
The other issue is purely with code generation. I suggest use everything SWC (both Assembler, Compiler and Linker) because AWE libraries are built with SWC. Make sure your project has the following settings:
Compile->Processor->Generate VISA code
Assembler->Generate VISA code
Link->Processor->Use Variable Instruction Set Encoding (VISA) Run-Time libraries
Refer the LDF file provided in AWE BSP for code memory configurations.

Yes I already done what you said but still getting lots of errors. The issue is placing the right sections as the sections are different between C and CPP as well as NWC and VISA. I have started from scratch with the default CPP LDF for 21489 EZKit and am building on top of it. I have got my own code working ok with it and started adding the sections for the AWE one by one. Just one wrong section placement and the thing spews out pages of errors !!
Anyway this morning I made some more progress and got it to compile without any linker errors. Now I am just debugging the code to see what is clobbering the main SPORT interrupt. So getting there slowly ;)

OK I think I am narrowing in on this problem.
The following line in the function AWEInstanceInit() in Platform.c is causing the system to crash. If I comment it out it is ok. So why does the simple assignment of the array address cause it to bomb out ? Had me puzzled for a while until I realized this is the only reference to the array and once you comment it out the elimination of unused variables and functions causes a whole lot of space to be freed up. Of course when I edit TargetInfo.h and comment out some of the modules sure enough if I edit out enough of them the thing runs ok without clobbering the system so it appears there are still some issues with the LDF. Fun and games with LDF's !!

OK it looks like I have nailed it. The last problem appeared to be caused by overlapping segments in the SDRAM section which the linker does not report.
Do I have to update to the latest Audio Weaver Server ? When I run the existing version 5.16.B04 and server version 4.1 the server does not appear to be pulling the right parameters in from the hardware.

Yes it's all working now except the server is reporting"Basic block size =32" whereas I am using a block size of 64. I thought I populated the correct size in the code by changing AWE_FRAME_SIZE and SAMPS_PER_TICK to 64.

To set the block size to 64, add the following line of code after your call to awe_fwInitTargetInfo in the AWEInstanceInit method in Platform.c:
g_AWEInstance.m_target_info.m_base_block_size = MAKE_BLOCK_SIZE_PACKED(64, 2);
where the 64 is the block size, and the 2 is the number of threads. This direct setting of the block size will be replaced by a new formal method 'awe_fwSetBlockSize()' in future versions of Audio Weaver.
Once you've added this line of code you should see "Basic block size = 64" in your server.
Let us know if you are still having problems.

Also I am having issues if there is too much delay in the main loop that I share with the calls to awe_pltTick(),awe_fwTick(&g_AWEInstance); It manifests itself with a beeping sound from the speaker which is a symptom of stalling in the sports interrupt.
How much delay can be tolerated and is there anyway to increase the allowable delay by increasing buffering etc ? Or do you have a facility to run a lower priority thread ?
I recall that this was not an issue with the earlier releases of the BSP.
EDIT: If I increase the block size from 64 to 256 it alleviates most of the issues. However it chews up heap size much more. Is there a way to increase buffering for AWE whilst keeping the DMA blocksize at a lower value ?

Hey David,
You shouldn't be having issues with the SPORTS interrupt, unless there is some code added that disables interrupts.
To troubleshoot interrupt issues on your SHARC, here's the recommendation from one of our embedded experts:
"I'd start by doing a simple pass-through and toggling GPIO pins and using a scope. Verify the DMA interrupt timing and duration, Also toggle on audio ISR entry/exit on a different pin, and verify the audio interval is as expected (and very small).
Example: when doing 64 samples at 48000 Hz, we expect 1333uSec intervals for DMA. If the layout is (say) 256, we expect every 4 interrupts we'd see the audio pulse for a short time.
The rest of the time is idle time. I'd expect under these conditions 98% or more time idle, and very regular patterns on the scope with extremely small jitter. Probably too small to even detect since this is a SHARC. If the scope has frequency measure mode, we'd expect 750Hz with very high accuracy on DMA to 5 or more significant digits, and with the (say) 256 layout 187.5Hz with the same precision. Replace as appropriate for other layout block sizes. I2S clocks can also be worth looking at, L/R in particular should be almost exactly 48000Hz."

I probably didn't describe the problem very well. If I load up an 8 channel pass through in Audioweaver designer and upload to the board everything works ok but as soon as I change the LCD screen pages I am getting these interruptions. Smaller on screen changes such as moving the menu item focus is not effecting this so it's obvious that time outside the SPORT interrupt running my code in the background along with the Audioweaver background code is having an impact on Audioweaver's ability to buffer enough data.
Now this is never an issue with 2ch mode which does not use AudioWeaver to process audio. There are never any interruptions even when I run an LCD test which continuously draws patterns on the screen and uses all of the background thread time. If i do the same with Audioweaver enabled of course Audioweaver background tasks cannot be completed and I get the typical squeal from the speaker as the SPORT interrupt no longer has any new audio data to output. So obviously there is a maximum time allowed for other processing other than Audioweaver functions before Audioweaver is interrupted.
And btw the LCD display is a graphical QVGA type and not a text based one so there is a lot more processing required for it.

Some further analysis of the problem. I used one of the DPI's and assigned it to FLAG4 so I could monitor on the scope how much time my own routines were taking and when I switch menu screens it is taking 78mS maximum which is enough to cause dropouts to AudioWeaver processing. It seems that anything more than 35mS will cause dropouts in Audioweaver ! Question is there anything I can do to force Audioweaver to process more data before it hands over control to my background routines ?? I tried repetitive calls to awe_pltTick() and awe_fwTick() but does not seem to make any difference !

To keep AudioWeaver server communicating with target alive, awe_pltTick() has to be called at regular interval. Please have a look at the definition of awe_pltTick() and awe_pltRenderAudio1() functions for more details about the logic. Hope this helps.

I had a brainwave last night. What if I utilise the dead time waiting to repaint the LCD to run the Audioweaver awe_pltTick() thread as well ? Yes and it works. No problems and everything runs smoothly ! No wasted clock cycles waiting for the LCD ! Will have to do some more testing but looks good so far ;)
