No audio output from Discovery Board

I am using the STM32F4 Discovery Board. I have run many projects successfully with Native Target. I am having trouble with USB Target. When I open a new project there are three outputs on my deinterleavers and two on my interleaver. I connect stereo L and stereo R straight across, and the third (mic) output to a null sink.

This project runs as expected on my Surface Pro running Windows 10, with one USB plugged into my Surface Pro and one into my docking station. I hear whatever I am playing on YouTube. If I swap things around and send stereo inputs to null and mic to both outputs, I can hear the mic (though it sounds horrible).

I am attempting to run  the same project on a lab machine, an Acer 6620 running Windows 7. I am unable to get audio output after much effort. I have also tried booting the Acer into Windows 10, but again there is no audio output under any circumstances.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

Can you try putting some Meter modules in your layout so you can see if there's any input making into the system? If you put one right on the input wire you should be able to see the first 2 channels jumping around when you play audio.

If the meter's don't measure any input, then the audio isn't making it to the system. Please make sure your PC is connected to the correct audio device, and also check that your volume is not at 100%. Also, you can try using a different USB cable to rule that out as the cause.

Let us know how it goes

Hi Axel, Thanks for your quick response! The meter bars are all moving. Just no sound output. The PC is connected to the AWE speaker. The same USB cables work with my surface. I had read about the other person who had the 100% volume issue. None of my PC playback or recording volumes are at 100%. I think you only mean the volume for the AWE speaker? I cannot think of another volume setting that would be relevant.

I've tried everything else I can think of. If the meter bars are moving in both cases, how can it be that I am able to get audio output from the Discovery board in my office, but unable to get audio output in the lab? My understanding is that the USB connections are strictly input, so I cannot understand how a different USB context can be killing the sound output. As I mentioned I have tried both Windows 7 and 10 for the lab machine.

Hmm. If the meters are showing activity, then it must be something downstream. Are you certain that your audio flow in Designer is sending the correct audio to the output pin? Can you try using the Sin Generator module to produce a sin wave inside of your layout and output that directly?

If the audio output from your layout is correct, then the issue may be with your output device. Have you tried more than one set of headphones or speakers connected to the audio out jack?

The thing is, the same app with the same headphones (or speakers) works in my office. I will do one more tour of everything with your sin generator idea (input nulled, I assume?) and report back.

Hi Axel, I tried sine out in the lab and did not hear audio on any of the machines I connected to. Though drivers reported as up to date, I tried a fresh HD Audio Codec driver install. After that when I changed the volume on the AWE Speaker down from 99, the audio started. So we will explore the interaction between the driver and the level of the AWE Speaker.

Thank you for all your help today, Axel. You are providing a wonderful resource for AW users and I really appreciate your style!

Ah, good to hear that you got it working in your lab as well.
